Sorry this is quite a rough draft. There’re many things I want to add/edit later. I’m just so busy these days.
This is solely personal opinion.
For me, Blog is
Online content that put in chronological order.(period)
Blog is
- not required to put personal aspect into it.
So that’s why there’re corporate/organization blogs
- not required to open to comment
So that’s why I still call kottke, daringfireball and many tumblelogs, a blog.
- not required to have other features such as ping/trackback, feed, etc.
- not required to be built with dynamic script (CMS)
I still call it a blog if it’s just .txt file published on internet, as long as it is updated the content in chronological order.
- not required to be updated regulary.
I still call it a blog, a dead blog though.
Barger coined the term weblog to describe the process of “logging the web” as he surfed. The short form, “blog,” was later coined by Peter Merholz- WikiPedia
So I’ll call Barger’s weblog/blog as link (b)log.
I’ll call personal page in social bookmarking like delicious.com, stumbleupon a blog too - a link blog it is.
Once, I used to use forum script to run as Content Management System because it’s easy to setup and post and there’re not many CMS scripts that suitable to me at that time.
from my definition, I may call a website that use forum script as a blog, if only it’s in chronological order and not push the recent reply topic to the top.
Last but not least, here are some basic points that I want to emphasize.
- Blog script is subset of Content Management System (CMS) script
- Online diary is subset of blog
- Blog is subset of website. You can’t say blog is better than website when it comes to SEO aspect dude, because blog is just another type of website.
If you see most blogs are more SEO-friendly than manually created/static website,
then thanks ping feature and automatic navigation system of the CMS.
